What’s Actually in My Cabinet Right Now (June Edition)
Heads up: Mom Cabinet is owned by The Absorption Company, the maker of Restore. One of the eight bottles in this cabinet is theirs. The other seven aren’t. We still test honestly and call out the real tradeoffs.
I opened my supplement cabinet this morning while the kids were arguing about waffles and counted eight bottles. Three I take every day. Two I take when I remember. Two are sitting there mostly out of guilt. One I’m about to throw away.
This is the column where I just tell you what’s actually in there, no filter. We’ll do this every season. Here’s June.
What I take every day, and why I haven’t quit
1. Magnesium glycinate (Absorption Co. Restore)
I take this with a glass of water about an hour before bed. I’ve been on it for six weeks. The honest read: I’m not lying in bed staring at the ceiling at 1am anymore, which I was doing three or four nights a week before. I’m not promising it’s the magnesium and not the fact that I finally moved my phone out of the bedroom. I’m just telling you what changed.
Glycinate is the form to ask for if you want sleep and calm. Citrate is the one your friend bought that sent her to the bathroom at 6am. We did a whole explainer on the difference if you want to read it.
It earns shelf space.
2. Vitamin D3 (generic, off-brand, $6)
I take 2,000 IU daily. My last bloodwork came back low so this one isn’t optional for me. I buy whatever generic the grocery store has because vitamin D is vitamin D. I do not pay $40 for a “premium” version. Save the money.
3. Probiotic (a specific brand I’ve been on for three years)
I won’t name it because I’m not sure if it’s still doing anything or if I’m just superstitious about quitting. I started it after a round of antibiotics in 2023 and the way my gut felt then versus now is night and day, so I keep buying it. This is the most honest thing I can tell you about probiotics: nobody really knows.
What I take when I remember
4. Collagen powder
In my coffee on mornings I am being a person who takes collagen. About two times a week. I am not above admitting that vanity is part of this. Whether it does anything for my skin or just makes me feel like I’m trying, I cannot honestly say. It tastes like nothing in coffee, so the cost of being wrong is low.
5. Electrolytes
On hot days, after a workout, or if I’ve had two cups of coffee and a glass of wine and I can feel a headache coming. About four times a week in summer. Twice a week in winter. The 3pm slump is real and I now believe it’s about half a hydration problem. Megan wrote a whole piece on that exact theory if you want to go deeper.
What’s sitting there out of guilt
6. A B-complex I bought in March
I read one article about how B vitamins help energy and I bought a bottle in a panicked Tuesday Amazon order. I have taken approximately eleven of them. The bottle is mostly full. I am not against B-complex. I just don’t think I needed this one.
7. Ashwagandha
Everyone said it. I tried it. I felt nothing. I’ll finish the bottle because I paid for it but I won’t repurchase. Some people swear by it. I’m not one of them.
What I’m throwing away
8. A “metabolism support” blend
Bought during a moment of weakness in 2024. Has eleven ingredients. Half of them I cannot pronounce. Has not been opened in nine months. Going in the bin today, partly to make space and partly to feel better about myself.
The bottom line
Three things daily that earn their shelf space. Two more I rotate through. Two I’m being honest about wasting money on. One in the trash. That feels about right.
If the magnesium is the one you want to try, you can grab Restore over at The Absorption Company →. I’ll do this again at the end of September.
